Kiwis Heading Home

Most of us Kiwis living in the UK come to a point where it is time to go home.

Maybe your visa has run out, perhaps you are missing friends and family, maybe its the relaxed New Zealand life style that is beckoning. For whatever reason, you are a Kiwi heading home.

But are you prepared for the REVERSE CULTURAL SHOCK?

When you came overseas, it was all exciting and new, and you were expecting a bit of culture shock. But what is Reverse Culture Shock?

REVERSE CULTURE SHOCK is simply the state of feeling like a foreigner in your own country, and many people returning from their OE's, experience this exact thing.

It can feel like starting all over again. You have to re-acquaint yourself with the people that are around (many of your friends may still be in the UK),and while this is initially exciting the novelty soon wears off. You have to get used to what you can and can't buy in the stores, not to mention prices. The job opportunies may not be as varied and the potential earning power may not be as great.

It can all be very overwhelming and many people experience deep sadness and can feel lonely and isolated as family and friends may not understand or be able to support you. Leaving the UK may not be what you would have chosen.

You have had a time in the UK where there can be lots of job opportunities and exciting travel opportunities ( I just got return flights to Ireland for 2p, including taxes!!). You have made loads of friends and may feel quite settled in the UK.

So now its a case of ......WHAT'S NEXT???

If you spend some time preparing for leaving the UK, the process will be simpler and can be less emotionally draining.

So how can you do that?

Many people don't even know what job they want to look for once they get home, let alone be able to line one up before they get there! You have probably grown and changed as a person during your time away. Who is this person who is going back to NZ?

Maybe you don't want to do what you did before, maybe you just aren't sure?

I have put together a special phone based coaching package for Kiwis heading home, THE FLYING KIWIS package, to help returning New Zealanders explore these issues and support them through the transition.

Email this Kiwi Career Coach based in the UK with your contact details, mention the FLYING KIWIS package which includes a free introductory session, and I will contact you with more information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Do You Really Need Meaning from Your Work?

I was reading an article online this week, which explored the idea that maybe we should stop looking for the meaning in our work, and just accept the pointless.

Several different scenarios were discussed which pointed out that you don't necessarily have to have a high flying, high paying job to get some meaning out of what you do for a living.

I couldn't agree more, but there is more to it than just picking a job and trying to make the most of it.

You need to have a whole person approach. Just looking at what skills you have and what may interest you, is not enough.

You need to consider your personality traits, whats important to you in your work, what motivates you. What you feel called to do?

Think back over some of your successes in life. What made them feel like successes for you?

As the article mentioned, Viktor Frankl, a nazi war camp survivor and Austrian psychiatrist says, it is mans search for meaning that motivates him.
