Nelson Mandela, what an amazing man

I was one of the fortunate few to be able to attend the concert that was held in honour of Nelson Mandelas 90th birthday.

What an inspiration this man Nelson Mandela is.

To be held in prison for 27 years for trying to make a difference in the world and then forgive every body involved upon his release.

The concert was called the 46664 concert which was his prisoner number. Meaning he was the 466th person to be jailed in 1664.

This is a man who knew his passion. He knew what he was put on this earth to do, and he did it!

He has continued to find ways to make a difference in the world with his aids charity and now at 90 is ready to hand over the job to others to make a difference.

Have you given much thought to what your life purpose is?

How important is it to be Resilient?

Following on from the blog about how to be mentally tough, I came accross this in a book I was reading by John Ortberg, author of The Life You've Always Wanted.

-Resilient people coninually seek to reassert some command and control over their destiny rather than seeling themselves as passive victims.

-Resilient people have a larger than usual capacity for what might be called moral courage - for refusing to betray their values.

-Resilient people find purpose and meaning in their suffering.

Very interesting don't you think?

Are you clear on your values? Values are an extremely important part of the job staisfaction mechanics.
Time invested in clarifying what yours are is time well spent.

How to be Tough, not just Happy

I was reading an article today that was talking about the way children are being taught to be caring, sympathetic and empathic, but that they may be missing a vital ingredient in their life skills kit.

Academics are saying that children who develop a mentally tough attitude increase their exam performance, positive behaviour and their aspirations.

They will be less likely to see themsleves as victims and less likely to be put off by initial failure.

But it's not only children that need to learn these skills.

How many adults do you know who could do with a more robust mental attitide?

Could you do with a more robust attitude?

It's things like learning how to set realistic and achievable goals that help with that. Learning anxiety control, improving your attention span and relaxation skills. Learning to take a chance when and opportunioty presents itself and see what happens!

These are all valuable life skills.

Realising that often the people who succeed, are not necassarily the best or the most intelligent or the most highly educated, they are often people that have the drive to do something and keep on with it.

You can't "positive think" your way to success.

You have to take control of your life!

The Apprentice Should be Happy

Last night was the final of the UK version of the TV show "The Apprentice".

I always find this type of programme really fascinating as the candidates are followed over the twelve week period, right up until that final moment, when someone is hired rather than fired and becomes the winner of The Apprentice.

It's interesting to watch how these competitive individuals relate to each other throughout the series.

I watched the programme afterwards which had people commenting on and to the candidates, and one comment really caught my attention.

The comment was that this one particular candidate for the apprentice job always looked unhappy, and that you should always have a smile, even at work. Your happy life shouldn't just start at 6 oclock or whenever it is you clock off!

How true is that?? Why is it that so many people just struggle through the day when it could be and SHOULD be a big part of your happy life!

Why do people put themselves through such misery?

Worse still, for the ones that do decide to do some self exploration and possibly make a change, there are so many people that are more than willing to try and talk them out of it.

That old "grit your teeth and think of pay day" mentality.

We don't have to live that way. There are so many opportunities out there and how will you know if there is a better one for you unless you start exploring?

These potential candidates on The Apprentice show were willing to change their whole lives for the opportunity at what they thought would be a great move for them. Sure there was risk involved, but if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

Don't settle for less than you deserve.

Avoid Being Sick on Your Break

There is nothing more frustrating than finally getting away, or even just getting to the weekend, to then find you spend half of it ill.

I know the feeling all too well!

I have suffered terribly from migraines over the years and would often get through a stressful week, only to spend the entire weekend getting through a migraine. It felt like such a waste of a life!

Can you relate?

Many times it is a sore throat, or a cold or some other such lurgy that robs us of our much needed, eagerly anticipated free time.

And this just adds to our stress levels!

It is all to do with the body producing excess amounts adrenaline and cortisol when we are stressed. Doctors will tell you that when you relax, the cortisol levels don't drop as quickly as the adrenaline, which makes your body more susceptible to infections.

I have always thought of it as when you are stressed, the body is busy coping with the stress. It is only when you relax that the body has time to notice that all is not well.

So what is the answer?

You have to learn to deal with stress on a regular basis. Not rushing around at the last minute and not taking on more than you absolutely need to.

I love the word DELEGATE!

Of course, in the long term, you need to look at my favourite hobby horse. Find out who you really are. What makes you tick? What stresses you and what energises you, and try to avoid the what stresses you part as much as possible.Make sure you are getting a good balance of what energises you.
