Yet, the basics for achieving a goal are always the same.

It begins with decisiveness, proceeds to focus, advances to action, persistence, follow through and eventually victory.

You and you alone are responsible for your own success. You either work hard for what you want or you don’t. Its that simple. I've said it before, you can't positive think your way to success, you have to take action!

therefore if you want to be successful in anything that you do, you have to take complete ownership of the process, which begins with goal setting.

If you want to get better outcomes, you must prioritize every action and activity.

Written goals are catalysts; they serve as transforming agents for success and achievement.

If you keep your goals in your mind they keep spinning around and are more likely than not to remain figments of your imagination.

Something happens in you mind when you put pen to paper. There is a real cnonnection in your brain when you physically write something down. So write your goals down, everyday! This keeps them in the forefront of your mind and not spinning around as a good idea.

Goals immediately take shape when you put your pen to paper. The goal progresses from thought to sketch, from sketch to action, and finally from action to achievement in real time.

A goal is more than a thought in your head. It’s a very real message about who you are and what you are capable of achieving.

So, begin by visualizing your goal and continue with that image until you get there. If you first go there in your thoughts then your body will soon follow.

There was a study done which split a group of basket ball players into two groups. One group practised, practised, practised. The other group did some serious visualisation about how they wanted to play better. Guess which group improved the most? Yep, the visualisation group!

Every Astronaut walks on the moon thousands of times in their mind before their feet ever get out of the ship.

Every goal kicker gets that ball over a thousand times in their head before they actually do it.

Get your pen and paper and write your goals down. What is it that you want to achieve in the next 12 months?

Get help with clarifying you work goals by signing up for my FREE 7 day mini e-course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

Should you Fake it til you Make it?

Have you heard that saying before?

It possibly conjures up images of people who think they are more successful and more important than they really are.

But I would like to think about this a little.

There's another saying, that "possession is 9/10ths of the law".

I think that goal setting and achieving your goals is exactly the same.

You have to act as if you own them. You need to possess them and own them.

Most importantly you need to act on them.

I was watching and interview with a very successful self made millionare in the UK, James Khan. He made his initial fortune by setting up a global recruitment company. When he first started out, he was very careful to give the impression that he was more than a one man band. He acted as if he was already the big successful company that he was to become.

No beginning proffessional would ever get very far, if they acted as if they had no confidence in their ability. A doctor acts as if he is a successful doctor, a mortgage consultant acts as if they have a wealth of experience etc etc.

I'm not suggesting you lie or be unrealistic, but you have to assume that victory is yours.

Do you?

Do you need help clarifying your goals?
Sign up for my FREE 7 Day mini e-course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

Please Dont Waste it!!

Are you wasting potential?

Wasting your Passion?

Wasting your GIFTS?

So many people have secret dreams and goals, and never do anything with them!

Thats terrible!

It's like being given a great big present all wrapped up with a beautiful bow, just waiting to be opened, and it gets put away in the cupboard.

Day after day, after day, you look at it and wonder what it could be! I feel the Work shouldn't be at the top of list.
Work wasn't ever meant to be our whole life, but granted it is a big part of it.
We need to work to have a life, but should we live to work?

It depends.

If we are doing the right job that we were created to do, then we will be getting so much fulfillment out of our work that we will love waking up each day and it wont even feel like work. This can only enhance all areas of our life.

But work should never be so all consuming, that we don't leave anytime for our families or indeed ourselves. We will eventually become rundown and get sick .

To quote a line from one of my favourite movies "The Princess Bride", if you don't have your health, you don't have anything!

Whats more, you will never get that time back with your children or loved ones. They may not be there forever and we can't take them for granted.

Nobody that I have ever heard of has come to the end of their lives and regretted not working more!

So yes, Life-work balance is very important.

You will find it easier to achieve this if you are in the right job for you.

Click Here for a FREE 7 day Career Optimiser Mini Course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

It's Not The The Work, It's the Purpose.

I am reading "The Shack" by William P. Young at present. You may have heard of it and you may not. It's a ±1 New York Times Bestseller and one of the books of the moment and challenges your preconceptions of God.

One of the statements I read last night was this:

"It's not the work, but the purpose that makes it special."

It really stood out for me as that can be so true in our own working lives.

It may not necessarily be the actual job that we are doing that is causing our sense of dissatisfaction and lack of fulfillment. In fact many people love their jobs but feel like there is something missing.

For example one man became aware of his desire to help disadvantaged communities. He stayed in the same job earning big money, but the purpose changed and earning the money now gave him a sense of purpose as he was able to give it to places where it would be well used. What's more, everybody says he is now a much nicer person.

Maybe you just need to get a view of the overall picture. The bible talks about us all being different parts of the body, and that each part is of equal value. The hands get to do their work by the feet taking them there.

How do you view your position? Have you forgotten that you are an important cog in a big wheel?

Click Here for a Free 7 Day Career Impact Coaching E-course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

by Marianne Williamson

This is one of my favourite quotes, often attributed to Nelson Mandela because he used it in his 1994 inaugeration speech.

Click Here for Free 7 Day Career Impact Coaching Mini Course

Are You Working Like a Dog?

The dictionary definition of "working like a dog" is that you work very hard.

I was watching some people have a discussion on whether they themselves worked like dogs or were they workaholics or neither?

There seemed to be a bit of a negative connotation applied to working like a dog.

I don't see any problem with working very hard, as long as you enjoy what you are doing.

A workaholic on the other hand cannot sit still. They don't know how to relax, very often their personal lives suffer and they end up with nothing at all except their work lives.

If you watch dogs (I am a bit of a dog fan) they know how to enjoy themselves. I love watching them run around having fun, sticking their noses out of car windows to grab every scent available, and you can't tell me dogs don't smile!

They love to work, they love to be appreciated and they love their rewards no matter how insignificant they may seem to us.

If we as humans got as much pleasure out of the work we were doing, we would be on the right track.

There is no point working like a dog, just trying to get through the week to the weekend, or just through your working years to get to retirement!

Who knows if you will even make it that far.

Life is for living! Make sure you are working in a job that you get satisfaction from while you are working like a dog , and in fact it wont even feel like work as the hours will fly by as you will be enjoying what you are doing.

Working like a dog does mean working very hard, but also if you think about it, it means enjoying it and even having fun while you are doing it.

CLICK HERE for a Free 7 Day career optimiser mini e-course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

What Do Others Observe in You?

One of the things I enjoy doing is people watching.

I find people fascinating.

I sat down for a few minutes at the local shopping centre today and just watched the people walking past. How they interacted with each, what kind of looks they had on their faces, how they walked.

You can tell alot about people by watching them

One of the things that has always struck me is that the most attractive looking people aren't necessarily the most physically attractive.

It's the people with a happy face that I find attractive. The big smiles or pleasant, contented dipositions.

When I was little, I remember a girl at our church who always seemed to be smiling, and I remember saying that when I grow up, I want to be like that.

Unfortunately so many people look miserable and very unattractive. I wonder what is not quite right in their lives for them to look like that?

What does your face, walk, smile say about you? Do you have things in your life that aren't quite right yet that need attention so that you can be contented and happy with life?

CLICK HERE for a Free 7 day career optimiser mini e-course

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

Can Girls Do Anything?

There was a programme on TV the other night, yes it was a reality programme which I am not normally a fan of, but this one interested me because they took three extremely successful business women, and placed them in a man only environment to see if they could adapt.

In this episode the three women were sent to cattle ranch where they had two weeks to learn to drive cattle. They had to encounter predjudices and chauvenism, and yet they got the job done.

They even earnt the respect of the cowboys.

What it seemed to prove was , that if you have the right attitude and determination, you can achieve what you want to achieve.

Im not not thinking about women in a mans world here, but anyone who wants to do something that others may think is crazy and not feasable.

If you:
Have the right attitude
Have enough drive and determination
Are teachable and can can develop the necessary skills
Have the right kind of support.......

Why shouldn't you be able to anything that you want to do?

There are plenty of people in the world who have done just that.

Deb@careerimpactcoaching.com

www.careerimpactcoaching.com

What Life Enhancing Clues are you ignoring?

I met a young lady yesterday, actually she cut my hair.

Anyway, I asked her if she always knew she wanted to be a hair dresser.

She said no. The problem comes when you are trying to be someone you were never created to be.

So many people get frustrated, discouraged and even depressed whe they are trying too hard to be somebody they really aren't.

You can do it for a while and may even get quite good at it. But after a time, it definitely takes its toll.

It's not even a matter of if, but when it takes its toll. You may experience job burn out, personal burn out, depression or general unhappiness.

This can be like trying to write with your left hand when you are right handed. You may get quite good at it, but it will never be natural and will always require more effort.

Spend some time finding out what your uniqueness is, then develop those unique capabilities.

Once you have this understanding of yourself, this will be the person you want to be, and you can THEN be the person you want to be.

You may be interested in another blog that I wrote , Chasing the Dream

www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

Are the Monday Blues real?

I came accross a news item that was quite interesting.

Not much practical use but interesting none the less.

Apparently there was study conducted in Australia to test the theory that people are more depressed on a monday morning and more elated on a friday evening.

Well apparently its a figment of our imagination. The study found that people were just as happy on monday mornings as they were on friday evenings.

In actual fact, they discovered that wednesday was more likely to be the day when people felt a bit down.

"As it turned out, the real low point of the week, we found, was Wednesday, not Monday, and that mood change was only slight," Professor Areni said.
(from the NZ Herald)

So it would seem if you are depressed on a monday, you are probably depressed the rest of the week as well (and watch out for wednesdays).

So there goes that excuse. If you aren't looking forward to work on mondays, it's not because it's a case of monday-itis, it's because you need to be looking at your job in general and why you are unhappy.

Career Success begins with knowing yourself, so start to get to know yourself, find a job or position that yourself likes, and get rid of those week long blues.

www.careerimpactcoaching.com

P.S if you would like to read the article CLICK HERE

Chasing the Dream

Who's dream are you chasing?

I went to hear a man called Dr John DeMartini speak the other night. Learning anxiety control, improving your attention span and relaxation skills. Learning to take a chance when and opportunioty presents itself and see what happens!

These are all valuable life skills.

Realising that often the people who succeed, are not necassarily the best or the most intelligent or the most highly educated, they are often people that have the drive to do something and keep on with it.

You can't "positive think" your way to success.

You have to take control of your life!

p.s. Click here for the article.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.CareerImpactCoaching.com

The Apprentice Should be Happy

Last night was the final of the UK version of the TV show "The Apprentice".

I always find this type of programme really fascinating as the candidates are followed over the twelve week period, right up until that final moment, when someone is hired rather than fired and becomes the winner of The Apprentice.

It's interesting to watch how these competitive individuals relate to each other throughout the series.

I watched the programme afterwards which had people commenting on and to the candidates, and one comment really caught my attention.

The comment was that this one particular candidate for the apprentice job always looked unhappy, and that you should always have a smile, even at work. Your happy life shouldn't just start at 6 oclock or whenever it is you clock off!

How true is that?? Why is it that so many people just struggle through the day when it could be and SHOULD be a big part of your happy life!

Why do people put themselves through such misery?

Worse still, for the ones that do decide to do some self exploration and possibly make a change, there are so many people that are more than willing to try and talk them out of it.

That old "grit your teeth and think of pay day" mentality.

We don't have to live that way. There are so many opportunities out there and how will you know if there is a better one for you unless you start exploring?

These potential candidates on The Apprentice show were willing to change their whole lives for the opportunity at what they thought would be a great move for them. Sure there was risk involved, but if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

Don't settle for less than you deserve.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Avoid Being Sick on Your Break

There is nothing more frustrating than finally getting away, or even just getting to the weekend, to then find you spend half of it ill.

I know the feeling all too well!

I have suffered terribly from migraines over the years and would often get through a stressful week, only to spend the entire weekend getting through a migraine. It felt like such a waste of a life!

Can you relate?

Many times it is a sore throat, or a cold or some other such lurgy that robs us of our much needed, eagerly anticipated free time.

And this just adds to our stress levels!

It is all to do with the body producing excess amounts adrenaline and cortisol when we are stressed. Doctors will tell you that when you relax, the cortisol levels don't drop as quickly as the adrenaline, which makes your body more susceptible to infections.

I have always thought of it as when you are stressed, the body is busy coping with the stress. It is only when you relax that the body has time to notice that all is not well.

So what is the answer?

You have to learn to deal with stress on a regular basis. Not rushing around at the last minute and not taking on more than you absolutely need to.

I love the word DELEGATE!

Of course, in the long term, you need to look at my favourite hobby horse. Find out who you really are. What makes you tick? What stresses you and what energises you, and try to avoid the what stresses you part as much as possible.Make sure you are getting a good balance of what energises you.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Kiwis Heading Home

Most of us Kiwis living in the UK come to a point where it is time to go home.

Maybe your visa has run out, perhaps you are missing friends and family, maybe its the relaxed New Zealand life style that is beckoning. For whatever reason, you are a Kiwi heading home.

But are you prepared for the REVERSE CULTURAL SHOCK?

When you came overseas, it was all exciting and new, and you were expecting a bit of culture shock. But what is Reverse Culture Shock?

REVERSE CULTURE SHOCK is simply the state of feeling like a foreigner in your own country, and many people returning from their OE's, experience this exact thing.

It can feel like starting all over again. You have to re-acquaint yourself with the people that are around (many of your friends may still be in the UK),and while this is initially exciting the novelty soon wears off. You have to get used to what you can and can't buy in the stores, not to mention prices. The job opportunies may not be as varied and the potential earning power may not be as great.

It can all be very overwhelming and many people experience deep sadness and can feel lonely and isolated as family and friends may not understand or be able to support you. Leaving the UK may not be what you would have chosen.

You have had a time in the UK where there can be lots of job opportunities and exciting travel opportunities ( I just got return flights to Ireland for 2p, including taxes!!). You have made loads of friends and may feel quite settled in the UK.

So now its a case of ......WHAT'S NEXT???

If you spend some time preparing for leaving the UK, the process will be simpler and can be less emotionally draining.

So how can you do that?

Many people don't even know what job they want to look for once they get home, let alone be able to line one up before they get there! You have probably grown and changed as a person during your time away. Who is this person who is going back to NZ?

Maybe you don't want to do what you did before, maybe you just aren't sure?

I have put together a special phone based coaching package for Kiwis heading home, THE FLYING KIWIS package, to help returning New Zealanders explore these issues and support them through the transition.

Email this Kiwi Career Coach based in the UK with your contact details, mention the FLYING KIWIS package which includes a free introductory session, and I will contact you with more information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Do You Really Need Meaning from Your Work?

I was reading an article online this week, which explored the idea that maybe we should stop looking for the meaning in our work, and just accept the pointless.

Several different scenarios were discussed which pointed out that you don't necessarily have to have a high flying, high paying job to get some meaning out of what you do for a living.

I couldn't agree more, but there is more to it than just picking a job and trying to make the most of it.

You need to have a whole person approach. Just looking at what skills you have and what may interest you, is not enough.

You need to consider your personality traits, whats important to you in your work, what motivates you. What you feel called to do?

Think back over some of your successes in life. What made them feel like successes for you?

As the article mentioned, Viktor Frankl, a nazi war camp survivor and Austrian psychiatrist says, it is mans search for meaning that motivates him.

If you would like to check out the article the link is:

I would be interested in your thoughts.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Get On And Get The Job Done!

I have just been to a Royal memorial service for a great New Zealander, Sir Edmund Hillary. The first man to conquer Mount Everest back in 1953.

The legendary mountaineer, adventurer, and philanthropist is arguably the best-known New Zealander ever to have lived and he died in January 2008 at the age of 88.

The Queen held a special memorial service for him at Windsor Castle, which was a rare event of high honour, where great achievements of this New Zealand icon were recalled.

Sir Ed was a down to earth and practical man, and his son Peter spoke of how his father would often say:

"you can't just sit there and wait for things to happen, you have to get on and get the job done!"

What great words!

"you can't just sit there and wait for things to happen, you have to get on and get the job done!"

Yes, I thought it was worth repeating.

How often are we guilty of just sitting around, waiting for things to change when we could be doing something ourselves to get the job done?

Do we continue just existing in our lives, hoping that one day, something will just magically change?

There is another saying that I like:

"if you always do what you've always done - you'll always get what you've always got!"

So is it time for you to get on and make some changes in your life?

Time to get on and get the job done I say.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Stress and You

I was reading an interesting article the other day about how stress affects your body.

There was a study conducted that found if a person was under 50 and had a stressful job, they were 70% more likely to develop heart disease as opposed to those who didn't find their jobs stressful.

70% more likely!!!

Can you believe that? We all know that stress is a bad thing, but that is a huge percentage!

Makes you wonder what the point is really. Here in this world, we have all these people, working hard to have a better life, and the chances are, they will die before they get to have one.

Working your self into an early grave, quite literally!

When people have stressful jobs, their eating and exercise habits often become a problem, and they often drink and smoke more to try and self medicate.

This adds to the stress we are putting our bodies under.

But also, the study that was conducted has found that stress appears to upset the nervous sytem that controls the heart. The part that tells it how to work and controls the heart rate. This is independent of the stress that the heart is under bad eating and exercise habits.

So it would seem that if you are in a stressful job, keeping healthy by having good diet and getting regular exercise is a great start, but ditching the stressful job would be the best bet.

deb@careerimpactcoahing.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

Spring and Interviews

Isn't it great to see a few clear days and some spring flowers making their appearance?

This brings a sense of possibilities. There is a possibility of summer. A possibility that things will be brighter.

With the sense of spring, a lot of people are looking at other possibilities as well.

I was reading that it is well a documented fact that some people can get quite depressed at the beginning of February in the UK because they have had enough of the long, dark, cold days.

I think this can transcend into other areas of their lives as well, and they feel quite depressed about their jobs. They've had enough of the seemingly endless long, boring, pointless days at work!

So it would seem natural that people start looking out for that new job, get a new outift, go along to a few interveiws, and see what happens.

Unfortunately, alot of people don't have much success because they are so ill prepared for the interview process. A new outfit is about as much preparation as some people do.

Have you been in this position?

How clear are you on who you are as a person and how you could make a valuable contribution to someone elses business?

Do you know why exactly it is that you aren't satisfied in your current role? Why are you looking to move?

Have you practised interview answers. There are sites on the web such as bymyinterviewer.co.uk that can give you ideas of questions that may be asked, and how to answer them.

As an ex-recruitment consultant I can tell you that if you go along to an interview with a clear idea of where you are going in your career and why you want to go there, it will help with the interview process enormously.

You will then have more chance of getting into a job that offers you that sense of new possibilities.

deb@careerimpactcoaching.com
www.careerimpactcoaching.com

What Talents Were You Born With?

Its so exciting!!! My first grandchild was born last week and obviously he's gorgeous!

As I was thinking about this new little man that has arrived on earth, I was wondering what natural talents and abilities are lurking in there. What personality?

I can tell you one thing, he isn't going to be a pushover. Boy does he get mad!!

I cant help but think about how we are all born as unique individuals with an amazing amount of potential. All it needs is nuturing for it to develop into the full potential that was designed for us.

This is my soap box really. It pains me to hear so many times, from so many people, that they have never stopped to think about what it is they are naturally good at. What it is that they naturally enjoy and that gives them a buzz or and energy surge. So many people just amble through life without giving it much though at all. Such a waste!!

How can you expect to live life to the fullest if you don't know what it is that you really want to do?
How can you expect to feel fulfilled if you havent even worked out what it is that gives you a sense of purpose?

It will be interesting to watch my little grandson develop and reveal his personality, just as it was with my own kids, but it is equally interesting to watch adults discover themselves as they give it some thought and time.
